Class Experience

This class was an awesome class. This class made me think about my future, and future problems that we might have to face in the future. I like taking a survey online which helped us with our choice of the carreer.

We did service learning project that helped homeless people. I picked peas and extract honey. I didn't know anything about extarction of the honey so I learned a lot of things about bees. That project was great experience.

Another project that we did was that we did research on homelessness and hunger and wrote a paper on it. That project taught me a lot things to. It taught me that this problem is not small, it is very big, and soon it will effect all of us.

The last thing that I liked was working on the Personal Develoment book. It helped me organize my prioirites. It also made me think about my strengths and weknesses towarrd my goal.

I know this was the hardest UNV 1010 class, but it actually taught me a lot of things about my myself so I liked it. we did do a lot of work, but i think it's worth it. This class will help me in the future.

Thoughts on Ulifeline and Alcohol Screening

Ulifeline is great source to help a friend or even help myself if needed. It contains all the information about the mental illness or how to prevent suicides? I think it is the best source for the college students because teens are the one who go through most of the tension during their first or second year of college.

Ulifeline can help students who are going through domestic problems. I think its just like therapy sessions, but for free. The positive thing is that we learn all these things about people for free. It even tells us about symtoms that we should pat attention to.

On the other hand, Alcohol screening is great source, too. It tells us about the alcohol problems and we can even take a test which will help us determine how much alcohol can we consume?

Everyone's alcohol level is different. Alcohol level depends on people weight, sex, and many more things. I think that website is awesome source.

Research Experience

I didn't have any problem with researching because I did research so many times before. Researching on this topic help me learn more things about homelessness and hunger. when I was doing this research I payed attention to couple of things.

The first thing I payed attention to was that if the source was reliable or not. The second thing I payed attention to if the source contains the information that I need. The last thing I payed attention to was that the source fits in to my research. I think these were the three important things to pay attention to.

Homelessness and Hunger

Who are homeless people? This question has a lot of different answers. The answer depends on each individual. Some people think the homeless people are those who live on the streets or roads. some people think the homeless people are those who live with their relatives or family members. There is no correct answer; it totally depends on the individual. It doesn't matter what people think is the correct answer because the fact is that the need for the food and shelter is increasing each year, and we need to do something about it.

The need for the food in 2004 was seventeen percent, and the need for the shelter was thirteen percent (Muhammad, par. 3). In 2009, the need of the food jump to twenty six percent, and one fourth of the US state reported increase in the need of shelter (Pierog, par. 3). Over the last four years, the increase in the demand of the food is more than double.

One of the biggest causes of increase in the foos is recession. There are a lot of people who are out of job right now. Other causes include low-paying jobs, high cost of housing, medical care cost, childcare costs, child abuse, and transportation expenses (Chapman, par. 3 and 4). No matter what causes people to become homeless, what matter is that it is increasing every year, and people don't do anything to stop it?

This problem of homeless is expected to increase next year. People don't see it coming, but really soon it will hit all of us. People don't bother to help because they think this not their problem, but it is. It they don't start taking care of this problem really soon then they have to suffer in the future.

There are many ways that people can help. some people think donating money is the only way and that's not true. I don't blame them for thinking like this because I used to thhink that, too. they are just not famililar with other ways. Other ways include donating old clothes, participating in the activities like packing food for homeless people or serve food to homeless people so what are you guys waiting for? TAKE ACTION RIGHT NOW!

Keirsey- career plan

According to the Keirsey temperament report, I am Guardian. Guardian people are very serios about their work and they get their work done on time. They follow all the rules of the society.

Even though guardian people are very serious, they enjoy their life with their friends. Guardian people do worry about changes, but not scared of accepting changes. Guardian people make up 40 to 45% of the population.

I totally agree with the results of the Keirsey because I think I am that kind of person. I love hanging out with my friends, but also get everything done on time. I think I am a responible person and do my job very seriously.

Reflection - Honey Extraction

At the Honey Extraction, I cleaned the house of bees. It was great experience and very hard too. The next day, my arms were hurting really bad because I had to take off the wax from the bee's house.

The project did fulfill my expectation because the money that we are going to make is going toward the food of poor people. According to the Maslow's model, the food is priority and this project is going to fulfill that need.

I learned that there are a lot of ways that we can help the poor. I used to think that by donating money, food, and clothes are the only way, but this is totally different way. It was fun and educational way. This project helped me learn a lot abot bees.

I knew about homeless people and I did participated in the activites that helped them. I had most fun in this activity and it was very educational one too. I didn't know that extracting honey is a long process and I learned that in this activity.

I learned that I actually liked this process. Even though it was very hard and time consuming, but it was still fun. I learned that people who don't make a lot of money to donate can still help. They just need to open their mind and find some other ways to help.
Pre-flection - Honey Extraction

The second project that I chose for service learning is called Honey Extraction. It was at a capuchin soup kitchen. I don't know anything about the Honey extraction, but I am excited. This is the first time, I am going to extract honey.
We are going to extract honey and sell it in the stores. The money that we are going to make is foe homeless and poor peaple. Even though this is something totally different from what we expect to do to help poor, but it still helps poor people.
I feel great because I am going to help poor and have fun at the same time. I don't really like bees, but I am looking forward to this project. My uncle had a bee business in India. I used to do samething. I never liked bees so I never visted the place where he kept bees, but now I want to see it.
This project will help community by raising money for poor people. Like every other project of sevice learning, this project will feed some homeless people which will be good for our community. If the poor people get some food to eat then they will have energy to work and help our community.
This project will help me think about the community and community concerns. If I know about our community corcerns then I am more likely to help in the future to make our community a beteer place. Homelessness and hunger is one of the biggest concern of our community.

Reflection- Earthworks

At earthworks, I harvested peas and it was great experience. The only problem was that I was hoping for nice sunny day, but it was chilly. The best part was the feeling that I felt after helping. I was very happy because I knew that vegetables will go to soup kitchen and then they will be cooked for homeless people. The feeling of helping is always great.

The lowest level on the Maslow's Model is food, shelter, and other essental things that we need to live. I think the most important one is food because without food, no one's body will give permission to think of anything else. there won't be enough energy to do anything else. I fulfilled my expectations by learning more about homeless people.

I learned a lot of new stuff about hunger and homelessness. I used to think that those people are physically fine so why don't they just work instead of begging for food, but I never knew that they can't think of anything than food because of medical reason. If they don't eat then they won't have energy to do anything else.

The hardest part was knowing that there were so many vegetables that would just go waste because people don't voluteer to help. I didn't really have any experience of homeless and hunger prior to this one so it was kind a fun. In my religion sikhism, we also believe in helping poor so my family is proud of me too. I also participate in the activites to help poor at my church like donate money or clothes.

It was very hard to manage time especially because of studies and work. I had to take time out of weekends to go help. It was hard to take time out, but I loved the feeling that i felt after helping. I would love to help again. Even though everyone's life is extremely busy, but I think everyone should care about our community and should go to help.

Maslow's Hierarchy of needs

In Maslow's Hierarchy of needs pyramid, the basic needs are food, drink, shelter, and air. The basic needs are very important to everyone. No one can live without these needs. unforuntely, not all people have basic needs today.

There are so many people who are homeless and who struggle to get just one meal. According to the medical research, to stay healthy we need atleast three meals and two snacks. I can't even imagine being homeless.

I can't stay without one meal and those people only one meal. I sympathize with them and I want to pray for them. I want to help them anyway I can. At my church, we donate food and clothes to homeless people.

I try to participate in the activites that are for homeless people. I know how they feel bacause i get headache if i skip one meal of the day. I used to skip breakfast and I used to get headache everyday.

My doctor told me that if i skip one meal then my blood sugar goes low and that's what make me get headache. I think that's why homeless people can't think of anything else except for food because they don't feel well. Their body is not in condition to think of anything else.

I can't contol my hunger. If I am hungry then I have to eat something otherwise I would start feeling sick. I can't imagine how homeless people live feeling sick almost everyday. I would to participate in any kind of activites that help homeless people.

Service Learning Pre-flection

I'm looking forward to go to capuchins Earthworks. I think we are going to do gardening. we'll plant fruits and vegetables. I love to plant trees.

I'm daughter of farmer so I do have some experience in Gardening. This agency does a lot of other community services too. This agency has a kitchen too.

I'm going to learn about plants and how to plant vegetables. If we work in the other area or department then we might serve meals or assist in the kitchen.

There is another thing that I like about this agency that we can donate online or sent a donation throw a mail. I think people who don't have time to go to the place and help can donate money online.

This agency has special gifts for special occasions like toys for christmas and dinner for thanksgiving. I think after helping in the capuchin earthworks, I'm going to be proud of myself because I helped.
